This is my fourth year student project at Moscow State University of Printing Arts
The brief was to create brand identity for Moscow based publishing house named "gorod"

Gorod is a publishng house with a mission to protect architectural heritage of old Moscow and at the same time to find a way of evolution for the city encouraging urban development to be both environmentally aware and drawn towards the modern.

They are publishing annual almanac about architectural development ideology and dealing with architectural criticism. 

Publishing house involved in architectural activism and sets a number of events to raise awarness about the topic.

When constructing the logo, i focused on the name "gorod" which translates from modern russian simply as city. But the word has an origin which gives it a deeper meaning, in old russian "gorod" means literally "part of the city protected with wall" or "the stronghold" that speaks about protection which is the main idea of the company.

Also it was clear that identity needed to reflect a way of creating visual links between modern architecture, experimental thought and tradition: the central part of the logo represents a top down wiew on the house with traditional hipped roof which is the most common roof type in old parts of moscow but formally is clear-cut technical what represents moving towards the modern and the futuristic without destroying the heritage.

On the other hand logo also has a merged shape between heart and russian "g"(г) letter that gives it a pictographic meaning when logo is wiewed from different angles which can be represented simultaniously creating a word play.

Also the building of publishing house was built to exactly match the shape of the logo in top down wiew, thats why logo has a cartographic coordinates as its part to link to its location on google maps ;)
